“Our dear martyr and protector, Saint Expedite,
You who know what is necessary and what is urgently needed.
I beg you to intercede before the Holy Trinity, that by your grace
my request will be granted.
(Clearly express what you want, and ask him to find a way to get it to you.)
May I receive your blessings and favors.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.”

Amen.
We supplicate Thee Lord, to inspire, by Thy grace all our thoughts and actions. That thou being their principle, we may by the intercession of St. Expedite, be conducted with courage, fidelity and promptitude, at the time proper and favorable, and come to a good and happy end. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Through syncretism, St. Expedite became associated with African spirits and was embraced for his ability to provide swift solutions to desperate situations.
Syncretism with African and Creole traditions.

Identification with ancestral spirits: In New Orleans Voodoo and other Creole traditions, St. Expedite became associated with African deities and spirits known as Lwa, particularly Legba and Baron Samedi. These figures act as gatekeepers, mediators, and tricksters, sharing St. Expedite's role in providing immediate aid and opening paths.

Merging of belief systems: During the transatlantic slave trade and colonization of the Americas, enslaved Africans and Indigenous were often forced to adopt Catholicism. They continued practicing their traditional religions by associating their own spirits and deities with Catholic saints. This allowed them to secretly maintain their beliefs under the guise of Christian worship.

Patron of the marginalized: As the patron of urgent and desperate matters, St. Expedite's appeal was strong for marginalized communities who often faced legal troubles, financial hardship, and other emergencies. His image as a swift problem-solver offered a sense of hope and agency in challenging circumstances.

Cultural significance in New Orleans
The "expedite" legend: A popular local story, though unconfirmed, tells of a package containing a statue of an unknown saint that was sent to a New Orleans church, possibly Our Lady of Guadalupe. The nuns assumed the word "expedite" stamped on the box was the saint's name, installing the statue and beginning his local veneration.

Marie Laveau: The revered Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, incorporated prayers to St. Expedite into her practices to make spells and petitions work faster, further cementing his importance in the local spiritual landscape.

Pound cake offerings: In New Orleans, a unique tradition developed of offering pound cake to St. Expedite, reflecting the syncretic mingling of different traditions.
